John Newton Membranes Completes Basement Conversion Project

A refurbishment project for a basement conversion in West End, Glasgow chose John Newton Membranes to replace the building’s waterproofing.

The new owners of this prestigious property in Glasgow’s West End discovered an unused sub floor space and realised the potential of creating a dry and functional basement area. The client did not want to disturb the original foundations and needed a waterproofing solution that would be cost effective and practical.

The Engineers involved designed a new raised ground floor level, using structurally designed support beams to achieve the required height in the basement.

Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Richardson and Starling Ltd then designed a robust waterproofing system incorporating Newton 508 membrane to the wall and floor area with the Newton Basedrain installed across retaining aspects of the property. To save on internal heights the Basedrain was rebated into the slab with the Newton 508 membrane directly across the floor. Insulation and a 65mm sand and cement screed was then laid. Independent dry-lining was then installed in front of the wall membrane to accept a plasterboard and skim finish. Any water entering the basement was diverted to the Basedrain then into a Newton Titan Pump System for removal.

The once redundant sub floor void was transformed into a magnificent living space adding significant value to this property in a sort after location.

The system designed and installed offers piece of mind to the client and specifier, and an insurance backed guarantee on all aspects of structural waterproofing.
