Glidevale Helps to Create a Pearl of a Development
Combining tradition and technology in both build techniques and style has proved a winner for Oyster Homes in Essex, with Glidevale’s roofing membrane contributing to the success of a project that saw all homes sold off-plan before construction was even half finished.
The Depot, a four-storey block containing 43 apartments ranging from studios to a two-level penthouse in the heart of Braintree, is the first UK project by the Irish property developer. Oyster has utilised advanced build materials to achieve a development that simultaneously blends with surrounding architecture, with design features such as Essex weatherboarding to the facades, whilst meeting modern construction standards.
A core element of the construction is The Depot’s roof: a complex design of box gutters and hips. Built up by Bracknell Roofing Company, the roof slate has been laid over Glidevale’s Protect VP400 vapour permeable roofing membrane, co-branded for the roofer. Bob Hales, branch manager at Bracknell’s Chelmsford branch which undertook the work, commented: “Our company ethos is the utilisation of traditional skills with technology; The Depot has been a perfect foil to demonstrate that. We firmly believe in using vapour permeable membranes in the roof, to ensure there is no long-term risk of condensation. I always prefer to use Glidevale because of the quality, and the price is right.”
Protect VP400 is one of the only underlays of its type that is certified for use without restriction for wind uplift. The Type LR membrane is also proven to avoid generation of nuisance noise under wind loading.
Highly vapour permeable but watertight, it ensures any moisture build-up in the roof is efficiently transferred through the roof covering above, eliminating the need for additional ventilation in the roof in a warm roof configuration. Protect VP400 simultaneously acts as a secondary line of defence against any wind-driven rain or snow that might penetrate through fortuitous gaps between the slates or tiles. Its watertightness means it can be used as a temporary roof covering.
Protect VP400 forms an integral element of the Glidevale Protect range of membranes, which includes Protect A1- the first real alternative to traditional 1F felt, Protect TF200 and TF200 Thermo breather membrane for timber frame walls, and Protect VC Foil reflective vapour control layer which provides up to 500 per cent reduction in heat flow through floors, 200 per cent in roofs and ceilings and 270 per cent in walls. Full details of the Protect range are available on the company’s website http://www.glidevale.com they are all available in Ireland exclusively through Richmond Building Products.
