Glass Houses Make Solid Sense as Home Extensions
The uncertain economic climate has created a mini-revolution in the conservatory market, according to Glass Houses by Jeremy Uglow, a leading supplier of orangeries and conservatories in the South East.
Jeremy Uglow is seeing order books fill rapidly as householders opt for an orangery to give them the extra living space they need rather than moving or adding a conventional brick-built extension.
“Spending £100k on a glass extension to give you a kitchen, dining and living room extension makes solid economic sense,” says Jeremy. “Moving up to a £1m house might give you the same amount of space but is much less cost effective when you consider the hidden expenses such as stamp duty, estate agent and movers’ fees and changing fittings and flooring to suit your taste. The current difficulty in predicting the housing market also makes moving less attractive.”
So while few people ask for a conservatory any more, orangeries are really taking off, according to Uglow. “With their relatively high proportion of masonry, orangeries feel more at one with the house than a conservatory but they offer much more light and a better sense of spaciousness than a conventional extension. Compared with conservatories, orangeries are less prone to extremes of temperature and add more value to your home. They also offer a better solution than an ordinary extension because the glass roof will let light into the adjacent room.”
Building an orangery can be complex, though, and involves considerable project management. With building work difficult to price and most companies employing sales staff with limited technical knowledge, Glass Houses is unusual in offering a fixed price up front with a 10-year guarantee and full project management, from groundwork to final finishes.
“Most busy people feel it is worthwhile paying a little more for this peace of mind,” says Uglow, whose company, based on the Surrey-Hampshire border produces fine bespoke timber conservatories, orangeries and pool houses which grace some of the finest homes in the country. The company has a passion for period architecture, fine quality and detail.
The company has developed its expertise in glass building design and manufacture with over 30 years in the industry. Every conservatory, orangery or pool house is designed to each client’s individual specification and built in the company’s own workshop.
