Dulux Trade Specified For Regeneration of Historic Railway Site
Dulux Trade products used in project that has transformed Derby College, restoring the existing historical listed railway buildings to blend seamlessly with the campus’s more contemporary features.
Dulux Trade products have been specified for a prestigious £43 million regeneration scheme to develop a cutting edge centre for vocational learning at Derby College. Dubbed 'the most ambitious project in Derby College's history', the scheme centres on a selection of historic buildings on the college's Roundhouse Campus that were originally used by British Rail to carry out steam engine repairs. The project, including a working turntable which has been incorporated into the design scheme, has been overseen by
English Heritage. The new campus will also be used as a visitor centre and social hub which people will be encouraged to visit to learn more about its history.
Situated next to Derby's railway station, the site's grade II listed buildings, which lay derelict for many years, have been painstakingly restored, but with an injection of 21st century expertise courtesy of Dulux Trade. The nature of the project meant that the paint specification needed to encompass a wide range of considerations, from the conservation of existing building elements to the long lasting protection of the finished article for future generations to enjoy.
Timber was a key component of the original buildings, so its restoration was an important factor throughout the project. Danish Oil from Dulux Trade was selected to showcase the natural beauty of the historic internal timber features, while preserving them for posterity. A blend of natural oils that permeate the wood for a water-resistant matt finish, Danish Oil was the perfect choice to ensure that the original characteristics of the building were maintained. Furthermore, a water-based satin finish from the Dulux Trade Weathershield range was selected to give long-lasting protection to the external joinery.
The college was also keen to ensure that the development's environmental credentials were high on the agenda. Products such as Dulux Trade Diamond Matt Light & Space - which is up to ten times more durable than standard silk emulsions and reflects up to twice as much light around a room than conventional emulsion paints - ticked boxes for both longevity and its energy saving credentials.
David Potter from Peveril Decorators, comments: "With a site of such considerable local historical significance, it was important that both the restoration work and the new build areas were sympathetic to the original buildings, but also in keeping with the college's cutting edge vision for its contemporary facility.
"While consideration of the site's aesthetics was vital, the paint specification also called for premium performance solutions. By choosing a selection of professional and durable products from Dulux Trade, maintenance cycles will be extended, keeping costs down across the whole lifecycle of
the buildings.
"This project has seen a derelict site turned into a flagship teaching facility which will attract a new generation of bright young talent to the college. Thanks to a bespoke specification from the experts at Dulux Trade, Derby College students will continue to be inspired by its vibrant learning environment for years to come."
