Conversion in Bristol Receives John Newton Membranes Treatment

John Newton Membranes laid down improved structural waterproofing for the basement of a newly converted apartment building in Bristol.

The previously unused vaulted basement in this listed property was part of a scheme of refurbishments to the entire property. The conversion provided the client with much needed additional space to the ground floor apartment. Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Protectahome Ltd was engaged to design and install a quality and cost effective waterproofing solution.

As the building was listed, the original access to the basement had to be retained. Therefore, the cellar steps from the street were incorporated into the waterproofing design. Newton 508 Mesh was installed to the walls and the barrel vaulted ceilings using NuSeal fixing plugs. Closed cell insulation (50mm) was installed to the floors. Newton Basedrain was then cited around the periphery of each basement room, the drainage channel then terminated into the Titan Sump and Pump System. Newton Slimline 5012 was then installed over the top of the insulation and then a 65mm sand and cement screed was installed. The walls were then finished with a combination of dot and dabbed plasterboard and a plastered finish.

The property was finished to a very high specification without compromising the Listed building’s original features.

The system designed and installed conformed to the high conservation standards required and would be able to be removed in the future without destroying the original building fabric. The added space provided by the basement conversion added significant value to this property, in this highly sought after location.
