Cemplas Completes Uxbridge Lido Sports Centre Refurb
Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Ltd was brought in when the Grade II listed leisure centre in West London required refurbishment in preparation for the Olympic Games.
The iconic Uxbridge Lido Leisure Centre, which has been closed for more than ten years, is to reopen in 2010 following completion of a monumental extension and refurbishment project, which includes the first Olympic- sized swimming pool to be built in West London for more than 40 years.
The main contractor Leadbitter was appointed to restore the Lido’s distinctive features, such as the grandstands, cascades and entrance, which have survived almost unchanged since the leisure centre opened in the 1930s. The grade II-listed open air swimming pool, perhaps the Lido’s most recognisable attraction is also being lovingly refurbished.
There is currently only one other Olympic 50m pool in London at Crystal Palace, and in preparation for the 2012 London Olympic Games, specialist Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Limited have already successfully completed the extensive waterproofing works together with concrete repairs to the Grade II listed Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
The refurbishment of the 1930s Uxbridge Lido will bring an important part of history back to life, and could be used by the British Olympic team in preparation for London 2012, and a host of famous athletes have already pledged their support for this groundbreaking development to train our up and coming champions of the future towards 2012.
Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Ltd have been instrumental in the refurbishment of the magnificent Uxbridge Lido, providing several key services to the project. A major part of the refurbishment works was to the Lido North Block, Cemplas initially grit blasted the entire surface of the North Block to remove the old existing coatings, before chasing out cracked sections in the brickwork and installing a Helibar system to restore the original structural integrity.
Following the remedial works the North Block was given a new surface finish using a polymer modified waterproof render, and before the entire project reaches completion, Cemplas will revisit the site to apply an elastomeric protective/decorative coating.
A key part of the brief was to keep the building exactly as it was, so all measurements had to match existing right down to the last millimetre. Cemplas has used laser levels on site to ensure each new measurement is absolutely precise, and the work has been closely monitored by main contractor Leadbitter and English Heritage. Cemplas is widely regarded as one of the leading restoration firms in the South East; this reputation has been reflected in, and reinforced by its pivotal role in the Uxbridge Lido project. The company celebrates its 40th birthday this year, and its wide-ranging experience and versatile approach have again proved ideally suited to the challenges of restoring one of London’s most iconic landmarks.
