Cemplas Achieves Speedy Finish at Airport Car Park

A multi-storey car park at Gatwick Airport was back in full use sooner than expected after resurfacing work, thanks to the expertise of Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Limited.

Car park at Gatwick Airport

The British Airport Authority (BAA) commissioned Jacobs Engineering to specify a new deck coating to Level 2 of the multi-storey car park adjacent to the main entrance of Gatwick’s South Terminal, Vinci Plc was appointed as the main contractor.

With many years experience applying Car Park Decking systems, specialist contractor Cemplas was awarded the £70,000 contract with the brief to remove the existing coatings, and to apply approximately 3,300m² of a new deck system to provide new parking bays and drive aisles for a new car valet service being provided to airport users.

After some investigation work, it was established that the existing car park deck system was a Sika product, and had been applied approximately some eight years earlier.

As Cemplas has over the years worked closely with Sika, and has a vast knowledge of using its Car Park decking systems on a number of multi-storey car parks, it was decided between Cemplas and the Vinci design team to undertake trials to establish how well adhered the existing Sika coating was to the car park’s substrate.

Following pull-off trials undertaken by Cemplas, the Sika system that was due to be removed achieved in excess of the minimum pull-off strength of 1.5 N/mm², and was found to be extremely well adhered to the substrate negating the need to remove it.

So as to create minimal disruption, after further trials and discussion with the manufacturer, the accepted proposal by Cemplas, was to mechanically prepare the existing substrate by means of blasting rather than fully remove it, and to apply Sikafloor 161 two-part, low-viscosity epoxy resin primer, followed by Sikafloor 264 two-part, coloured epoxy resin over the previous coatings as this was proven by the trials undertaken to be fully compatible with the existing Sika coating.

On completion of the project, the client BAA was delighted with the finished works which Cemplas delivered below the initial budget, ahead of the initial programme, and was backed by its own 10-year workmanship guarantee.
