ACO drainage system a winner for Cheltenham grandstand
Visitors to The Cheltenham Festival were able to enjoy the splendour of the new £45m grandstand blissfully unaware that under their feet an ACO Building Drainage system was doing its job in a winning way.
The huge grandstand project at the prestigious Cheltenham Racecourse has provided new member facilities, general public viewing areas, private boxes, The Cheltenham Club and the Royal Box. Contractor Kier Construction completed the work on behalf of The Jockey Club earlier this year.
During phase one of the project, sub-contractors Smiths (Gloucester) asked ACO Building Drainage to design and supply the drainage system for the floor area in the new grandstand. The drainage system needed to be easy to install and able to work the depth restrictions created by the building’s design. It also needed to be ‘foot friendly’ for race-day spectators.
ACO Building Drainage supplied a mixture of ACO Multi-Drain M100D Channel and, in areas where a shallow depth channel was required, ACO Modular 125 Stainless Steel Linear Channel.
ACO Multi Drain M100D is made from Vienite® - a sustainable, high strength material that can be fabricated in three widths (100mm, 150mm and 200mm) and a variety of depths and slopes. Channel units are certified to BS EN 1433: 2002 Load Class D 400 and can be supplied with a variety of grates.
ACO Modular 125 stainless steel channel, an evolution of one of ACO Building Drainage’s most popular modular channel systems, is a fully flexible stainless steel drainage system that is suitable for most applications in an off-the-shelf format making it extremely easy to install.
Manufactured from Grade 304 stainless steel, Modular 125 also benefits from excellent corrosion resistance.
Both systems were installed into the concrete slab floor of the grandstand along with ‘foot friendly’ locked ACO Quadrato gratings.
Peter Wilcox of Smiths (Gloucester) said: “We’ve worked with ACO on many occasions and they were the obvious choice of supplier for us on this prestigious project. They were able to supply a high performance, easy-to-install system that met the requirements of the architect, venue and race-goers. Their in-house team was also on-hand to provide technical advice and support when required.”
