A Clean Start for St Roses Students

Students at a Stroud school for children with severe physical disabilities are awash with pride thanks to new specially-adapted bathrooms.
St Rose’s School, which this year celebrates its centenary, provides education, care and therapy for children aged 2-19 years old with severe disabilities and complex health needs including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, sensory loss and brain injuries.
The special school was in desperate need of new bathrooms as its previous facilities were no longer fit-for-purpose after going 20 years without refurbishment.
St Rose’s School turned to Sheffield-based Kingkraft, specialists in assisted bathroom adaptations and sensory products, to help them design the new bathroom facilities for the students, many of whom need assistance from parents and carers when washing.
Kingkraft helped create a wet room, complete with ceiling track hoist, and replaced the original bath in the other bathroom with a height adjustable tub and ceiling track hoist.
The new facilities have now enabled many of the students to take a more leading role in their daily routine, and ultimately, are helping them to lead more independent lives.
Sheila Talwar, Head of Care at St Rose’s School, said: “One of the most important aspects of daily life for our students is the opportunity to live their lives with dignity.
“People take being able to clean themselves on a daily basis for granted. For our students, taking a bath or simply having a wash can be an extremely complex routine.
“Thanks to the new bathroom, our students and their carers are now able to access bathroom equipment that is designed specifically to cater for children with severe physical disabilities.
“Kingkraft’s experience and specialist knowledge of kitting out bathrooms for this kind of project played a massive part in the successful delivery of the project.
“The students love the new bathrooms. They are modern and easy to use, and allow comfortable bathing facilities for our young people. It is exactly what we were hoping for. ”
Michael Bithrey, Contracts Manager at Kingkraft, who led on the project, said: “Having years of experience of specialist adaptation works meant we could advise Shelia on the best solution to meet the requirements of the school, and of course, the needs of the students.
“We’re delighted with the finished result but it’s also been great to complete the project with the minimum of disruption so that students have been able to carry on with their daily routines.”
