Perrie Hale Forest Nursery Company Profile
Perrie Hale Nursery has over 50 years’ experience of propagating trees and hedging shrubs native to the British Isles and supplying them to everyone from individuals to large corporations.
Virtually all stock is grown from high quality locally-sourced seed, with a handful of species propagated from cuttings. The native species are tried and tested to grow well in the British climate.
Both bare-rooted and pot grown plants are available – in any quantity from one tree to 100,000 trees. Bare rooted seedlings and feathered whips offer the best value and will quickly establish, whether planted as a mixed native hedge, windbreak, large plantation or small coppice. The plants are lifted to order and despatched in co-extruded plant bags which prevent the plants from drying out in transit.
Plants can be collected from the Devon nursery or delivered throughout the UK mainland. The nursery operates on a wholesale basis and all trees and shrubs have to be ordered, by web form, fax or post.
A wide range of species are supplied, both broadleaf and conifers. To help customers select the plants likely to grow best in different areas and create the desired effect, the company has used its expertise to group the stock into trees and hedging plants suitable for:
- Windbreak
- Coastal sites
- Damp sites
- Exposed sites
- Woodland
- Wet woodland
Selections of plants for these sites are available in packs, mostly of 50, 100, 500 or 1,000 plants. There are also packs containing a variety of plant species suitable for producing woodfuels such as firewood and woodchip. The hedgerow pack has an option to include the seed of wild flowers and grasses that are suitable for sowing beneath hedges.
The Perrie Hale Nursery website gives full details and images of the trees or hedging plants recommended for the different sites. A catalogue is available to download. Discounted prices are offered for orders of 5,000 plants or more and the website also gives information about the various grants that can be applied for when planting woodlands.
The website also includes a large amount of information on preparing a site, planting the trees and shrubs and after-care.
Perrie Hale Nursery has been run by the same family since 1957 and the knowledgeable staff are happy to answer any questions. The nursery has been involved in major projects such as the South West Forest and the BBC’s Tree O’Clock world record attempt.
The nursery is inspected by the Forestry Commission to ensure that it complies with the EC Forest Reproduction Material Regulations and by Defra to comply with Plant Health Regulations.
