Intumescent Seals Company Profile

Intumescent Seals, a Division of the Dixon International Group Ltd, manufactures low cost intumescent fire and smoke seals for fire doors, fire-safety glazing, ventilation grilles and other apertures which require protection from the passage of smoke, fire and fumes.

Thousands of Intumescent Seals products are incorporated in fire doors throughout the UK and worldwide.

The company, formed in 1982, is the only firm in the UK to manufacture such a wide range of intumescent products, giving it a highly informed understanding of the technology. Its Cambridge site has the latest facilities for developing, testing and manufacturing new products from bespoke solutions to seals designed to meet the particular needs fire door manufacturers, partitions and other products requiring fire resistant properties.

Products

Therm-A-Stop

A combined fire and smoke seal. The casings contain an expandable graphite-based intumescent compound which is unaffected by moisture in the air and so does not require careful protection when being fitted. The brush piles include a thin polypropylene fin to reduce the flow of ambient smoke. The seals are rebated into the head and jambs and are suitable for FD20S, FD30S and FD60S single and double doorsets in timber, steel (or both); single action and double swing doorsets (latched or unlatched); controlling the flow of ambient temperature smoke during the early stages of a fire.

Therm-A-Seal

A new generation of intumescent fire seal. The PVC casings contain an expandable graphite-based intumescent compound which is unaffected by moisture in the air. The seals are rebated into the door's head and jambs and are suitable for FD20, FD30 and FD60 single and double doorsets in timber, steel (or both); single action and double swing doorsets (latched or unlatched).

Therm-A-Flex

A flexible, all-purpose intumescent material which can be decorated if required. It is suitable for sealing gaps in elements of construction, between fire resisting doors and frames, shutters, windows and adjoining walls, around services where they penetrate fire compartments and in voids within services.

Therm-A-Smoke

A cold smoke seal for use in fire resisting doorsets, primarily in conjunction with an intumescent fire seal that is concealed behind the door lipping. The seals comprise high density brush pile encased in PVC and are usually rebated into the door.

Therm-A-Wrap

An easily-fitted intumescent pipe wrap which offers a low cost alternative to metal cased pipe collars where a fire compartment is breached by uPVC thermically-softening pipes and where the pipe wrap can be fully cast-in to the wall or floor.

Therm-A-Channel

This is manufactured from a fire resistant elastomer in the form of a dry channel shaped liner (12mm wide x 15mm deep) offering an easily fitted glazing seal for 30 minute fire doors and screens. Therm-A-Channel is particularly well suited to use in curved glazing pockets (as well as angular apertures).

Therm-A-Glaze 30

A flexible, dry intumescent strip which is located discretely between each pane of fire safety glass and the beads holding it in place to provide protection for 30 minutes.

Therm-A-Glaze 60

This is designed to enable the glazed panels of fire doors in FD60 and FD60S rated timber fire doors using untreated hardwood beads to meet the requirements of BS 476: parts 20 & 22: 1987. Depending on the construction of the door leaf and the arrangement of the doorset, Therm-A-Glaze 60 makes it possible to glaze areas up to 0.47 square metres.

Therm-A-Close

Intumescent pipe collars protect the integrity of fire walls and floors where they are breached by thermically-softening plastic pipes. They can be surface-mounted or partly cast-in.

Therm-A-Grille

Lightweight intumescent ventilator cores offering excellent airflow characteristics and rapid activation in the event of a fire.

Other products include intumescent pads to provide simple and concealed protection for fire door hinges; intumescent foam used mainly in expansion joints and cavities in the walls and floors of fire compartments; intumescent lining plates for letter box flaps and gun grade intumescent mastic for small scale fire-stopping applications.

Performance data for all products is available on the website and the technical department is happy to give more specific advice.

Intumescent Seals firmly believes in the value of providing comprehensive technical support to customers. Its engineers provide free technical advice on product selection, fitting and other general questions. Site or factory visits can also be arranged. The company offers free training to fabricators, installers and other contractors wishing to learn about the correct installation of intumescent products.

The research team develops solutions for a wide variety of new or unusual intumescent applications.

The Design Council has recognised the company’s pioneering approach. The council chose four intumescent seals to become Millennium Products, which represented the most innovative, leading edge products in the UK in 2000. One of the company’s intumescent seals was selected to join a British Council tour of international exhibitions, showcasing the UK's top 120 new products abroad during 2000 and 2001.

Intumescent Seals products protect people the world over, from the Surrey HQ of Sony UK to the new Chep Lap Kok airport in Hong Kong.
