Fermacell (UK) Company Profile
Fermacell is based in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands and specialises in the manufacture and supply of Fermacell gypsum fibreboard dry lining boards for walls, ceilings, floors and cladding for commercial and domestic new-build and renovation projects. Fermacell is a high performance multi-purpose building board that combines the properties of solid brickwork with the efficiency and flexibility of drywall techniques, allowing the designer to utilise radical solutions for interior space planning.
Fermacell is widely available to purchase through many building suppliers across the UK and Ireland and a national network of installers can be found on the website. A recommended contractor training scheme is available which enables contractors, surveyors and management staff to be fully trained and certified for installation techniques and practices.
Fermacell Gypsum Fibreboard
Fermacell is manufactured from recycled gypsum, recycled cellulose fibres and post-consumer waste paper and recycled water that when combined together forms a homogenous mass that is turned into a dense sheet material. Most construction projects have different partitioning requirements, but often there are common needs such as acoustic, fire, impact performance and environmental considerations no matter what the building is to be used for. Partitioning is used by many establishments such as schools, sports centres, hospitals, prisons, retail outlets, art galleries, commercial properties, private residences, off-site constructions and timber frames. Key features of Fermacell include:
- Fire resistance to Class 0, Euroclass A2 and Class 1 surface spread of flame certification
- Excellent acoustic performance that reduces the transmission of sounds such as voices, audio equipment, loud speakers, musical instruments and machinery
- Severe Duty Rating and impact performance tested to BS 5234-2:1992
- High moisture resistance
- Stronger than conventional plasterboard
- Environmentally friendly
- Manufactured from 100% recycled materials and will assist the overall BREEAM rating of a building
Systems and Solutions
Fermacell is suitable for a wide range of applications and includes:
Partitions
Fermacell boards can be used with metal or timber partitions and provides properties associated with solid masonry, the flexibility and speed of drywall that is thinner, faster and cheaper to install. Fermacell is used for metal stud, timber stud and twin frame partitioning systems.
Linings
Fermacell is a fast and efficient way of lining walls such as proprietary metal systems, timber frames and dot and dab fixing. Fermacell reduces the need for wet trades as it has a fast and simple jointing system.
Flooring and Ceiling
Fermacell is ideal for floor and ceiling applications and provides simple solutions for acoustic and sound requirements. The flooring systems offer a dry screed system solution for refurbishment, new-build and timber frame applications. The systems not only increase sound insulation, but also a dry screed solution to overlay underfloor heating and levelling solutions to uneven floors. The ceiling systems offer superior fire and acoustic performance to timber and concrete ceilings using a resilient bar or a suspended ceiling system which decreases the airborne acoustic transmission.
Fire Protection
Fermacell provides a 30 minute construction time using a 10mm Fermacell for beam and column encasement. The installation time of the encasement systems can be drastically cut by stapling the boards together or to timber sections and beams. From simple fire-rated independent linings to full shaftwall solutions, Fermacell provides performance systems from 30 minutes to 2 hours using simple stud systems and standard Fermacell boards.
Timber Frame
There are a number of options for load bearing and non-load bearing applications. The timber frame systems offer simple solutions for internal partitions and party walls including Part E and Robust Detail compliant systems. The use of Fermacell Jointstick and Fine Surface Treatment reduces drying times. Powerpanel HD boards are suitable for external cladding and provide weather proofing, structural rigidity, fire protection and sound proofing.
Rainscreen
Fermacell has been commonly specified for rainscreen applications on timber frame buildings across Europe for over twenty years. The gypsum fibreboard has been independently tested for use as a backer boarding on vented rainscreen applications. It is highly weather resistant and will not degrade through permanent exposure. It is recommended that a surface treatment or alternative protection is applied prior to the installation of the cladding system.
Wet Rooms
Swimming pools, shower areas and wet rooms often pose a waterproofing problem to the developer. There are four options for areas that are exposed to water and moisture.
- Fermacell Powerpanel H2O boards and flooring elements provide an impervious seal for shower and wet areas in commercial and domestic applications. H2O boards can also be used for semi-exposed external applications such as soffits.
- Powerpanel HD boards are used for external cladding on timber framed constructions to provide weather proofing, rigidity, fire protection and sound proofing.
- Gypsum Fibreboards are suitable for domestic applications where humidity does not exceed 80% or where tiles provide protection from water.
- Fermacell Gypsum Fibreboards with the Fermacell waterproofing system is suitable for surface sealing Fermacell boards against moisture, providing an impervious coating. This allows the user to use the benefits of Fermacell and sealing the boards against water in wet areas at the same time.
Fermacell prides itself on offering a wide range of gypsum dry lining boards for an extensive range of applications within many commercial and residential situations.
