Carpenter Oak Company Profile

Carpenter Oak has a history dating back to 1987 and is a specialist in the design and construction of beautifully crafted timber architecture. The company has worked on numerous large and small scale projects, creating stunning structures such as oak framed houses, extensions, conservatories, garden structures and public buildings and timber engineering projects.

Carpenter Oak is based near Totnes in Devon and has expertise in both traditional and contemporary design, catering for a wide range of customer requirements. The team at Carpenter Oak has built up a reputation for producing consistently excellent workmanship at highly competitive prices. The company prides itself on adopting a friendly and easy-going, yet professional approach on all projects.

Timber is one of the most sustainable construction materials available and the majority of timber used by Carpenter Oak is grown and sourced from FSC or PEFC approved suppliers in the UK and mainland Europe. Generally oak will serve its purpose as a framing timber for over 70 years and will reach its prime at the age of around 120 years. The use of timber in construction encourages the forestry trade, which responds by planting more trees. Carpenter Oak guarantees that for every tree used, ten more are planted.

Services

Carpenter Oak has formed a close working relationship with Roderick Jones Architects, a group of around fourteen architects who have been designing frame buildings for more than 25 years. The designs they have created push the boundaries of timber engineering, are truly unique, distinctive and stunning and have won numerous top awards. The team is equally committed and challenged to create anything from a modest residential home with a restricted budget, as they are working on a large and complex project with fewer budget constraints.

Benefits of Oak Timber Frame Structures

Oak has been used for many centuries and is an ideal building material as it is extremely durable, strong, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing. Oak is capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions, is naturally resistant to rot and insect attack and ages beautifully in time. Timber frame structures are also known to be lighter than standard masonry buildings.

Products

Carpenter Oak has a dedicated and experienced team of timber framers who work with a hands-on approach, enabling the craftsmen to adapt appropriately to every piece of timber. The timber structures are framed up at the Devon workshop and once completed, are transported to the site. Some deliveries have been made as far afield as Japan and America. Oak frames are built using very precise and accurate dimensions using traditional jointing systems and hand-held tools. Full workshop and frame drawings are required to translate the frame from the architect’s drawings into a form which can be built by the skilled carpenters. All Carpenter Oak carpenters are qualified with an NVQ in Structural Post and Beam Carpentry or are working towards the qualification.

The frames can be designed and constructed for a wide and varied range of projects including:

  • Contemporary houses
  • Traditional houses and barn houses
  • Extensions
  • Conservatories and sunrooms
  • Bar conversions
  • Garden buildings, cabins and boathouses
  • Public buildings such as garden centres, nurseries, cafés, theatres and heritage centres
  • Conservation and restoration projects
  • Timber engineering such as roof frames, bridges, tree houses and bespoke structures.

Carpenter Oak is fully committed to designing and building stunning, hand-crafted timber frames to individual customer specification. The expert team of craftsmen undertake a versatile approach to tackling a wide and varied range of projects from simple timber frame structures to large scale public building projects throughout the UK and further afield. The friendly and professional team welcomes enquiries and will work closely with the client to create a truly unique and quality structure.
