Butyl Products Company Profile

Butyl Products Ltd was founded in 1962 and specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of geomembrane liners, pond liners, water tanks and bespoke products. The company supplies the products to a wide and varied range of industries and can develop solutions to suit individual bespoke requirements.

Butyl rubber was the very first geomembrane used in the United Kingdom. As new products such as PVC, polypropylene, HDPE, LDPE and Elvaloy have been introduced, the company has been at the forefront of the development of appropriate welding systems for such products and establishing the most suitable area of use based upon chemical resistances and mechanical properties. Butyl Products offers a full project management service covering design, specification, manufacture and installation.

Geomembrane Liners

Butyl Products is an independent company which is not linked to any material manufacturers, so clients can be assured that suggestions for materials and designs are completely unbiased. Geomembrane liners are typically used for lakes, reservoirs, lagoons, rivers and canals. The company also supplies secondary containment liners for the petrochemical industries.

Prefabrication and detail work is carried out in the UK-based factory and the technicians install all materials on-site, sealing structures as required providing a liquid or gas tight finish. All work is carried out to ISO 9001. The team can produce a wide range of flexible fabricated components in thicknesses ranging from 0.5mm to 2mm.

  • River, Canal and Stream Lining: Butyl Products can design, fabricate and install lining systems for rivers, canals and streams. These types of projects can utilise a range of geomembrane materials. A typical example of work carried out includes a 5km stretch of a canal which had areas of ground contamination and was lined with LLDPE. Areas that suffer from settlement were lined with butyl rubber and an area which was contaminated with oil was lined using reinforced polypropylene. Other important aspects involved in the design of linings for rivers, streams and canals include liner protection systems and fixing methods to structures such as locks, bridges and sheet piling.
  • Wildlife Ponds, Wetlands and Lakes: When using a liner within a natural environment such as a wildlife pond or wetland, it must provide a natural habitat and food source, whilst being strong enough to not be damaged by the wildlife. Butyl Products offers a comprehensive range of lining solutions which incorporates geotextile liner protection, butyl rubber lining, an above liner protective cover and a minimum 50mm cover of soil.
  • Reservoirs: Reservoirs are used to contain a variety of liquids and must contain a liner system which is chemically resistant. Butyl Products can design, manufacture and install a liner which is UV and ozone resistant as well as being able to tolerate varying ambient and liquid temperatures. Other products available for reservoirs include reservoir roofs to prevent leakage into the reservoir, covers to prevent rainwater and debris contaminating the stored liquids and vertical curtains which control the correct flow of water through the reservoir.
  • Bunds and Oil Tanks: Butyl Products can provide primary containment geomembrane lining systems for petrochemical fuel tanks and secondary containment bund linings. Secondary containment is generally achieved in the majority of chemical/oil tanks by constructing a tank inside the reservoir which is known as a bund. Bund lining materials must have chemical resistance and strength to tolerate long term exposure. With many years of experience, Butyl Products has carried out numerous retro-fit tank linings for a variety of applications.
  • Water and Sewage: Butyl Products has developed a range of linings for water and sewage treatment systems. Polyurethane, polypropylene, butyl rubber, elvaloy and PVC are commonly used in the fabrication of water and sewage liners for applications such as filter beds, settlement lagoons, oxidation ditches, aeration ponds and reed beds.
  • Pond Liners: Butyl Products' range of pond liners are extremely easy to install and will enable gardens to have beautiful, leak-free water features. There is a wide range of flatsheet liners and box welded liners which are manufactured in sizes to fit perfectly into any pond, whether it is a natural or formal shape. For more complex ponds, Butyl Products can provide an installation and on-site welding service. The bespoke liners are designed and manufactured within 72 hours of an order being placed.

Water Storage Tanks

Butyl Products designs and manufactures a selection of storage tanks for the storage of drinking water, process water, firewater and other liquids. These types of tanks are commonly used for agriculture, horticulture and leisure sectors. Products include:

  • Demountable Tank Kits: Demountable tanks are generally used for agriculture and horticulture purposes, as well as for storing firewater and process liquids. The tanks can be used for both long and short term requirements and are available in capacities of 8,000 to 200,000 litres.
  • Bladder Tanks/Pillow Tanks: Bladder tanks are ideal for use in harsh environments and can be used for the temporary storage of water, fuel and petrochemicals.
  • Quick Tanks: The Quick Tank is a tank which can be erected very quickly and is suitable for handling water, waste and contaminated liquids. The Quick Tank capacities range from 3,000 to 40,000 litres.
  • Onion Tanks: Onion tanks are self-supporting and are suitable where an instant open use tank is needed. Onion tanks are commonly specified for use with bladder tanks and can be erected on flat ground in a matter of minutes. Capacities are available up to 30,000 litres.

Bespoke Products

Butyl Products plastic and rubber fabrications can be specified for numerous applications across many industries. The products are commonly utilised for the containment of aggressive materials and chemicals which could be hazardous if not contained correctly. The design team can work closely with a client to develop components that meet their specific requirements. Examples of bespoke products include air and gas tight enclosures and airbags and OEM components.

Butyl Products is committed to developing, fabricating and installing a comprehensive range of geomembrane liners, water tanks and unique bespoke products to satisfy the requirements of a diverse range of industries. The experienced and dedicated team welcomes enquiries and can provide cost-effective and practical solutions for a range of applications.
